Story
Marysabel Caballero and her husband Moises Herrera are 2nd and 3rd generation coffee farmers in Honduras. Their work has been awarded several times for their focus on quality. We have been working with their family since the mid-2000s, and Nordic Approach has been purchasing their coffee since 2012.
Marysabel's father, Don Fabio Caballero, inherited extensive plantations around Marcal, one of the country's pioneer coffee-growing areas. He later passed the land on to his daughter and her husband, who combined their holdings and now cultivate almost 200 hectares across 17 farms.
They process the coffee in their Xinacla wet mill, where they usually separate the produce from individual farms. If the quantities are small, they combine them into “Caballero” blends, which rival the best single-phase coffees in quality.
Their farms have clay soils, the main variety is Catuai, but also Java, Pacamaro and Geisha. The conditions are often humid and windy, and the terrain is rugged. They carefully document the entire process and constantly invest in new varieties and equipment.
Their focus on quality earned them 3rd place in the SCAA "Coffee of the Year 2010" competition and several placements in the Cup of Excellence.
The Caballeros are particularly concerned with sustainability: they make their own organic fertilizer from animal manure and coffee husks, and in addition to coffee, they also grow oranges, avocados, bananas, and flowers, which increases biodiversity and improves growing conditions.
